Bar magnets are one of the most common and versatile magnet shapes. They are typically long and thin, most often rectangular, but can also be produced in cylindrical or other elongated forms.
Unlike cube or block magnets, which are equal-sided or rectangular in proportion, bar magnets are designed to provide strong and concentrated magnetic fields at their ends, making them ideal for many practical uses.
At AEMagnets, we specialize in custom bar magnets tailored to different industries and applications. Our bar magnets are manufactured from high-quality magnetic materials such as neodymium, ferrite, samarium cobalt, or alnico, ensuring reliable strength and durability. Each magnet has clearly defined north and south poles, working with the same principle of magnetic attraction and repulsion.
Producing a bar magnet involves more than just shaping metal. The process depends on the magnetic material selected and the performance requirements of the end application. At AEMagnets, we use advanced production techniques to ensure consistent quality, precision, and durability.
1. Material Preparation:
The first step is selecting the right material—ferrite, neodymium (NdFeB), samarium cobalt (SmCo), or alnico—depending on the strength, temperature stability, and cost requirements. Raw materials are melted, alloyed, or powdered, then carefully tested for purity and consistency.
2. Forming the Magnet Shape:
This step ensures the correct size, tolerance, and surface finish before magnetization.
3. Magnetization:
Once shaped, the bar is exposed to a strong external magnetic field, which aligns the internal magnetic domains and permanently sets the north and south poles. Magnetization can be customized (axial, diametric, or multi-pole) depending on the application.
4. Coating & Surface Treatment:
To improve durability, many bar magnets—especially neodymium—receive protective coatings such as nickel, zinc, epoxy, or Parylene. This prevents corrosion and enhances service life in demanding environments.
5. Quality Control & Testing:
Each bar magnet undergoes strict testing for magnetic strength, dimensional accuracy, and coating quality. Methods such as Gauss measurement, pull force testing, and visual inspection ensure that every magnet meets the required specifications.
Neodymium block magnets come in different grades, which indicate how strong the magnet is. The grade is based on the magnet’s maximum energy product (MGOe)—the higher the number, the stronger the magnet.
Common grades include N35, N38, N40, N42, N45, N48, N50, N52, and N55, along with special high-temperature types such as M, H, and SH series (e.g., N42M, N48H, N52SH).
For example, N55 is one of the strongest grades available, offering very high magnetic force, while lower grades like N35 or N42 are more cost-effective for general use.
Keep in mind that a magnet’s actual performance also depends on its size, shape, and coating, not just its grade. At AEMagnets, we provide customized solutions to help you choose the right grade for your specific application.
We provide block & bar magnets according to your customized requirements.
Thanks to their simple shape and reliable performance, bar magnets are used across a wide range of industries and fields. Their versatility makes them essential in both modern technology and everyday demonstrations.
